Kennedy Sharp in Puerto Rico
Peter Abraham updates Ian Kennedy's winter progress: Ian Kennedy must have not gotten the news that he’s washed up at the age of 24. He threw a three-hit shutout in Puerto Rico last night. Facing first-place Arecibo, Kennedy scattered three singles, walked one and struck out seven. The complete game dropped his ERA to 1.57 this winter. I’m not saying he’s Cy Young. Or even Matt Young. But Kennedy is too young and too talented to proclaim him no help to the Yankees. I don't

Yankees Arbitration Rumination
You never used to hear that much about team's offering free agents arbitration. Now you hear it every year, presumably because people actually treat the draft like it's important. Imagine that. Or it could be the fact that these guys get ridiculous money for amateurs. So, why should we care about who the Yankees offer arbitration to? MLB.com lays it out pretty simply : By offering six-year free agents arbitration by midnight ET, clubs can guarantee two Draft picks for an

Suite Charity in the Bronx
It was only a matter of time before stories like this began to trickle out: Mayor Bloomberg's top aides engaged in a behind-the-scenes brawl to win a free luxury suite at the new Yankee Stadium that could wind up costing taxpayers, e-mails show. Some of the mayor's top deputies spent months threatening and cajoling to get the free skybox. They even demanded free food and ultimately got most of what they wanted after they agreed to provide America's richest team 250 free stad

Pettitte's Dodger Dance Forces Yankees' Hand
Uncle Joe to the rescue. Andy Pettitte has been waiting for the Yankees to make him an offer. A few days ago, with no word from the Yankees, Pettitte spoke to Joe Torre about the possibility of playing for the Dodgers. At the time, word was the Dodgers didn't have any interest. And yet, a few days later, George King at the Post says the Dodgers might have "some" interest in Pettitte. That sounds just vague enough to be absolute nonsense. I don't think Joe Torre has a chi

News and Notes 11/25/08
-> Tyler Kepner reports that Brian Cashman is expecting a big bounceback from Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez. He also expects the rest of the lineup to perform better: With the Yankees prepared to lose Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreu to free agency — and focusing mostly on pitching after trading for first baseman Nick Swisher — they need Canó to be the player they expected. His name was the first General Manager Brian Cashman mentioned when asked Monday about his confidence

Boras to the Rescue
Garret Anderson hired Scott Boras. After originally deciding to represent himself, Anderson wised up and hired Boras. Why? AVG OBP SLG OPS .296 .327 .469 .796 Those are Anderson's career numbers. Last year, when somehow the Angels paid him $12.6 million? AVG OBP SLG OPS .293 .325 .433 .758 Anderson needs Boras because a 36 year old left-handed outfielder isn't going to get anywhere near $12.6 million for those numbers representing himself. He needs Boras and one of his Bi

Perspective on George Michael Steinbrenner III
The following in an excerpt from an article written for Bill James Online ($). Bill has posted some great writers, including himself, along with some of the best statistical resources you will find on the intrawebs. Head over there and take a look. The unofficial became official: George Steinbrenner is no longer the managing partner of the New York Yankees. On Thursday, Major League Baseball approved his son, Hal Steinbrenner, as the new managing partner. It is the end o

George, er, Hal is All Bluster
Hal Steinbrenner officially took over the reigns of the New York Yankees this week. Hal Steinbrenner. Not Hank. See, Hal is the money guy, and when you're pushing around the Benjamins like the Yankees have and will continue to with their new stadium, you need the money guy at the top. And that guy is Hal. You only have to listen to Hank for about 4.5 seconds to realize he's not the money guy. Hank is the mouthpiece, the guy who loves to talk because his thinks his voice

Moose calls it quits
It's funny looking at all the adoration that Mike Mussina has been receiving over the last two days. If you had asked most Yankee fans what they thought of Moose at the end of the 2007 season, the nicest answer would have been, "decent pitcher but never did anything in pinstripes." It's amazing what a difference a 20 win season can make. Couple that with the low expectations that followed Moose into the 2008 season and it's no wonder Yankee fans are a bit nostalgic. As it

IR Helps ARod
Instant replay made it's long awaited major league debut last night and, wouldn't you know it, Alex Rodriguez was the beneficiary. Everything came off according to plan. The review took two minutes and fifteen seconds and all parties involved seemed to feel justice was served. Here's the funny thing: I'm not sure that the call was right or that instant replay was capable of providing the proper evidence. The ball ARod hit was so far above the foul pole (ok, FAIR pole...)

Overestimating Joba
It's reality check time, both for the Yankees and their fans. Joba will start for the Yankees against Toronto Tuesday night, marking his first appearance in the Yankees rotation and last out of the bullpen. At least, we hope. Temper your expectations. We'd all like to believe that Joba's 95+ fastball and devastating slider will translate instantly to the starting rotation, his above average curve and changeup completing an arsenal that will devour major league hitters.

Girardi and the Bench
Three games in for the Yankees and I think Joe Girardi deserves good marks. There hasn't been a hell of a lot to judge him on, but he hasn't screwed anything up yet either. I do take issue with two things: 1 - I think he left Moose in for a batter too long on Wednesday. This whole notion that a starting pitcher has the right to try and finish an inning is a bit ludicrous. Moose doesn't have an outpitch and was getting himself into trouble the entire game. A few DP

Bonds Patient Once Again
Spring Training has started. Even Alex Rodriguez is supposed to show up on Wednesday. The seeds of a new season have been planted. And yet, Barry Bonds does not have a contract. I never thought the day would come when a player would alienate the baseball community so much that he could post at least a .999 OPS over the previous and not have a job at spring training. It's defies logic. But Barry, once again, has done the seemingly impossible. Of course, the lack

Clemens and McNamee: Dissecting the Public Opinion
We're two days past The Showdown at Capitol Hill and the papers and IntraWeb have been swirling with opinions, body language "experts," and blowhards like me telling you what to think. The testimony before Congress didn't clear up many facts or determine who was lying the least, but instead raised more fodder for the back pages. It isn't worth recapping the news in this space; there's plenty of prettier web sites with AP feeds that can do that for you. Instead, we're going t

Clemens, Congress, and the Dog and Pony Show
There's a phrase used to describe people who go out of their way to work with famous people, not for their talent, but simply because they're famous. Those people are known as starf*#kers. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the 110th Congress: starf*#kers. The Steroids Rodeo Revue returns to Washington DC tomorrow, but the cast of characters will be a thinner than advertised. Chuck "Twelfth Row" Knoblauch, Andy Pettitte, and Kirk Radomski have all been ex
