Phil Hughes vs Freddie Garcia

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

Tonight, Phil Hughes vs. Freddie Garcia. I am fairly sure the ump will allow the pitchers to blow on their hands tonight, It is 49 degress as I write this. Tonight’s Lineup: Doug Bernier, 2B John Rodriguez, DH Todd Linden, LF Shelley Duncan, RF Juan Miranda, 1B Austin Jackson, CF Eric Duncan, 3B Angel Berroa, SS Chris Stewart, C

Hughes 1st inning

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

Gave up a leadoff single and that was it. He used mostly cutters and curves, and quite effectively. 1 SO.

Bottom 2nd

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

Bernier doubled, John Rodriguez bunts for a single moving Bernier to 3rd. Garcia got lucky when Rodriguez slipped going back to first and got caught in a rundown, Linden struck out and Shelley Duncan popped out.

Easy 2nd for Hughes

Helped by a great defensive play by Shelley Duncan going deep to right center to make the catch and touch the wall.

Hughes gets out of trouble in the 3rd

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

The inning started with a strikeout, and ended with a strkeout and in between Jose Coronado had a bloop single, followed by a sharp double to left by Corey Sullivan, but no scoring.

SWB’ 2 Buffalo 0, bottom 3rd

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

Bernier lead off the inning with a booming double, Rodriguez walked, and then Todd Linden doubled to right to plate 2, and took 3rd on a bad throw to the plate. SWB’ leads 2-0.

Hughes strikes out the side!

In the 4th. He used a wicked curve, cutter, and recorded his first 92 FB of the night.

Hughes pitching a gem

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

Shutout through 6, and very efficient. He has thrown only 79 pitches, has 6 strikouts, has given up only 4 hits. He is using his FB more in the later innings, but has a very good curve going tonight.

Linden home run in the 6th

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

SWB 3 Buffalo 0.

Hughes great through 7.2!

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

Phil Hughes pitched a masterful game throwing 105 pitches, 75 for strikes. His final line: 7.2 6 1 1 1 7. I was very impressed with the way he mixed up his pitches, and he used his fastball later in the game to keep the hitters off balance. Again, his FB never topped 92, but with all his other stuff, it was enough. Mark Melancon is in.

Game update through 8

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

SWB added 2 in the 7th & 1 in the 8th, and Buffalo got 1 in the 8th. SWB 6, Buffalo 1. It is raining and cold again tonight, a miserable night for sitting here in the stands!

Melancon closes, SWB wins 6-1

Posted on 22 April 2009 by Zod

Melancon pitched 1 2/3, struck out 2, and allowed 2 hits. Hughes is now 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA! Game StoryRecapBox
