Yanks Want Damon One More Year, But To Do What?

BP via YanksBlog reports that the Yankees would like to bring Johnny Damon back for one more year. The hope is to keep Austin Jackson is AAA for one more season and make a move for Matt Holliday and/or Jason Bay. Damon is not going to accept a one year deal. At the very least, the Yankees would have to give him a year with an option. There will be more years available on the market for Damon and, despite his claims that he doesn't want to go anywhere else, we've heard it before when he was in Boston. Damon will probably go where the money is. I don't really see why Damon has much to do with Austin Jackson anyway. Jackson will likely be coming up as a centerfielder as that's where he's played most of his innings in the minors. The only people Damon could be bumping from a job (or part time job) are Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner. Damon isn't long for the outfield and the Yankees would benefit more from his bat than his glove. Removing him from the outfield would probably save his legs a bit, which have always been a bit baulky. Chances are, Posada will be getting a little more time at DH next season as he gets older. Posada won't like catching less than 100 games barring injury, but Girardi will want to keep his bat in the lineup. Posada and Damon could probably swap the DH role while playing the field on the other days. Holliday and Bay are both predominantly left fielders and neither have particularly great ARM ratings through FanGraphs, making a shift to rightfield unlikely. Bay, in particular, does not have very good defensive numbers, even with a short left field at Fenway that at times made Manny Ramirez look decent. Damon doesn't have an arm for right field and has no business being in center. If the Yankees were able to get Holliday or Bay (preferably Holliday), Damon's only role on this team is as a DH. As far as who they should go after, Holliday is definitely the better option. Holliday, despite a rough patch in Oakland, is a much better fielder than Bay and is also a year younger. He's posted better OBP than Bay while also posting a better batting average. If the Yankees can get him, it would be the better move.
