Last night, man on the beat Peter Abraham reported the latest on the Giants and Sabathia:
Meanwhile, Giants GM Brian Sabean said tonight that his team is not planning to make an offer to CC Sabathia, acknowledging that other teams can outmuscle them financially.
The market shrinks evermore... That basically leaves the Dodgers as the only west coast team that has not officially stated they won't pursue CC (except the A's, but...). At this rate, it still seems like a two horse race, with the Yankees outpacing the Brewers by $40 million. That doesn't rule out the possibility of a dark horse at the winter meetings. There will be a ton of wheeling and dealing going on next week at the Bellagio and it won't all be on the tables. Once the numbers start to get established for some of these pitchers, teams may creep out of the woodwork that decide they can handle the going rate. It's certainly possible that the Angels could get back in it late if they think CC can be had for a few dollars below asking if the west coast truly is that much of a draw, especially if the Teixeira negotiations fall apart on them. Next week is going to be very interesting. Hopefully it will make up for the boredom of the last month.
